Bonaire

December 2021

Picture a tiny island in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. Bestow upon it, a vibrant coral reef spanning its entire length – just a couple hundred feet away from shore.

Add a deserted beach for kiteboarding. Let’s make those winds blow offshore, to make things exciting. And how about a separate bay just for windsurfing? Some flat, shallow water for that would be lovely.

Throw in some unique, locally distilled spirits for good measure. And for the weather – warm, breezy afternoons with pleasant evenings sounds nice. Sound like paradise? That’s just what life is like on Bonaire.

This photograph captures the essence of what the diving experience is like on Bonaire:

  1. Rent a pickup truck
  2. Pick up scuba tanks from the drive-thru service center.
  3. Drive along the island’s lone highway to one of the over 100 well-marked dive sites.
  4. Don your gear and walk into the water.
  5. Blow your mind with the wonders of the sea.
  6. Ascend to the surface for some topside lunch.
  7. Rinse and repeat.

The underwater photography gear is a lot to carry, but I certainly wouldn’t want to lose these beautiful sights to my very ephemeral memory.

Bonaire’s only shipwreck – the Hilma Hooker.

Trying out some windsurfing on Lac Bay.
